For something different we went up into the Dandenong Ranges above Melbourne for a lab hike - most of us had leeches on us afterwards.
December, 2021
After spending nearly the entirety of 2021 working from home due to COVID, we were finally able to meet as a lab and celebrate an early Christmas and BBQ in the park. This was also a send-off for three of our graduating PhDs who went on to start new post-doc positions
~most of 2021...
Like many labs and workplaces around the world, COVID was extremely challenging. This was particularly impactful for all of us in Melbourne where we experienced >320 days in strict lock downs with most of our lab working from home during this time. While it was an extremely challenging time, we tried our best to meet virtually and maintain our lab culture.

The stakes were high, the kitchen was hot, the flavours were bold.
The lab had a cook-off, MasterChef style, as a teambuilding activity during the retreat. Here are some of the highlights:
The winning team was Phagealicious (Luisa, Nando, Wai Hoe, Sofia and Laura) with their menu of seared fish, Asian-style prawns, and passion fruit cheesecake. The Phage Gourmet (Marion, Dinesh, John, Fang and Ciaren) came very close with their egg dumplings, lamb curry, and chocolate cupcakes. But we all know that the real winners were the judges (Julien, Charlie, Tim, Christina and Jeremy)
Just a cheeky one in the lab.
Being a PhD student means that you blink twice and it's already time for the next milestone! Fernando passed his Mid-can review.

After months of working from home and withstanding a pandemic, the PhD students got back together for a picnic in the park. So great to see all those smiling faces!
